NAPPY TYPES

 

There are 4 different styles of cloth nappy available. It can seem really confusing in the beginning trying to decide which is the best nappy system for your needs. If you are still unsure, then CONTACT ME to discuss your nappy needs further.  

 

FLAT NAPPIES are so called as they start out as a piece of flat, absorbent material which is folded and combined with a waterproof wrap.  

Flat nappies  are the cheapest way to use real nappies and are very easy to wash and dry.  It is often possible to use just one size and they can be easily adjusted to  the body shape of your baby.

SIZED NAPPIES come with either separate covers (2 part) or built in (pocket or stuffable). They are available in sizes from newborn to toddler. The advantage of this is a snugger fit for newborns but does work out more expensive as various sizes need to be bought. Nappies with built in covers are closest to disposables in their speed of change and are incredibly easy to use. However, the advantage of 2 part sized nappies is that there are 2 layers, and when fitted correctly are almost 100% leakproof.  There is no folding required as the nappy is already shaped to fit your baby, just like a disposable  but a little more versatile as they fasten with poppers or Velcro.

ONESIZE NAPPIES come with either separate covers (2 part) or built in (pocket or stuffable). They are often referred to as Birth to Potty as the nappy has popper adjusters at the front to grow with the baby. The advantage of this is you only have to buy one set of nappies, so more economical. Onesize nappies may seem slightly bulky on a newborn but babies are tiny for such a short amount of time, making these nappies a popular choice.

POCKET or Stuffable nappy combines the absorbency and quick drying qualities of a Flat nappy with the convenience of an All-in-One nappy.  Pocket Nappies are available in sized versions or birth to potty and allow you to separate the absorbent part of the nappy when washing and drying.  Pocket nappies work by stuffing a terry, pre-fold, booster or microfibre pad into a pocket between the waterproof outer and the fleecy, stay-dry layer that goes against baby’s skin.  

 

 

SIZES Most types of real nappies are available in 2 sizing options:  Birth-to-potty which allows you to adjust the size of the nappies using poppers to fit your growing baby. Sized - usually size 1 from birth to approx 20lbs, then Size 2 until potty training

WRAPS are most commonly found in different sizes but you can find some birth-to-potty style wraps.

 

 

 

 

 

 

FABRIC Nappies and wraps can be made of many different fabrics, such as cotton, bamboo, hemp, microfibre, fleece, wool or pul (polyurethane laminate).
